US chain store comp retail sales for April rose by 0.6% year-over-year as measured by the ICSC's tally of 22 major retail chains. An early Easter and continued warm weather contributed to the tepid results. Among merchandise categories, Luxury Stores led with an 5.8% gain, followed by Wholesale Clubs with a rise of 4.0% and Discount Stores with a rise of 2.4%. Apparel was up 2.2%, Department Stores gained 0.6%, and Drug Stores dropped by 4.1%. Among individual retailers, Gap dropped 2.0%, and Limited rose 6.0%; Costco was up 4.0%. Nordstrom was up 7.1% and Saks gained 2.0%; Target grew by 1.1% and TJX by 6.0%. Macy’s gained 1.2%, and Kohl’s fell by 3.5%; Rite Aid was up 2.9%, and Walgreens fell 6.4%.
