National: March same-store sales for the ICSC’s index of major retailers rose by 2.0%. The ICSC estimates the shift in the date of Easter to April 24 dampened March sales by about 1 to 2%, which should be recovered in April. By segment, Wholesale Clubs (+12.1%), Luxury Stores (+7.7), and Drugstores (+2.2%), all showed gains, while Department Stores, Apparel, and Discounters showed drops of 0.3%, 1.6%, and 4.4% respectively. Among individual retailers, Costco gained 13.0%, and BJs Wholesale rose 5.3%, Nordstrom gained 5.1%. RiteAid dropped 0.1% and Walgreens gained 3.0%. Macy’s rose 0.9%, while JCPenney fell 0.3%, and Kohl's dropped 6.5%. Gap was down 10.0%, but The Limited gained a strong 14.0%. TJX fell 1.0%, and Target was down 5.5%.
